My main contributions are to the Blues News magazine, the official match-day programme for Birmingham City Football Club. I’ve also written two pre-season guides for Future’s former footballing title, Total Football, back in the late 1990s, and frequently contribute to various online footballing forums.
I’ve contributed since the 2002-3 season, with a two-season break in the middle when the magazine was leased to a third party publishing house. For 3-4 seasons I reviewed the newspapers’ coverage of Blues in a single-page Media Watch column. Then in the 2009-10 season I switched to writing The Ex-Factor, another single-page piece looking at how former players and managers were doing at their respective clubs.
In 2010-11, the year Blues won the Carling Cup and got relegated from the Premier League (the first side to achieve this unwanted double in the Premiership era), I wrote a piece entitled “From the Vaults”, a two-page review of a classic match between Blues and their matchday opponents. This involved taking a selection of local newspaper reports from the period – both before and after the game – and writing a coherent report of the game itself, plus the build up and fallout.
For the 2011-12 season, I switched again to write a single page “On This Day” piece, another retrospective piece summarising three matches and newspaper headlines from the same day from previous years. This column was extended to two pages for the 2012-13 season.
